Xiaomi Redmi A2+: Is it a timely release?

Xiaomi Bangladesh has officially released its newest low-budget smartphone, Xiaomi Redmi A2+ with a price tag of BDT 9,999 (3/64 GB) and BDT 10,999 (4/64 GB). The big question we have asked at this moment of time is, “is this a brave and timely release from Xiaomi?”

The short answer is, No. Firstly, let’s appreciate that we have a more fresh lower-budget phone compared to the previous Redmi A1+ and the price is also lower this time. We’re getting a new Android version, longer security update and so on. But Android 14 has just released and this phone is gonna run maximum till Android 13. Then there are just two years of security updates. The initial release was on March 24th. So, we are already missing almost seven months of updates. Now, just about one year and five months of security update left. It’s not really worth it.

If you desperately need a phone for basic usage for a short while and looking for something stable and trustworthy, this is the only time maybe you can consider it. But there are a few other good phones in the market, such as the freshly released Symphony ATOM 4 for BDT 8699 with a Unisoc T606 chipset with much better gaming performance. The price is also lower. But mind that you’ll get 3 GB RAM and 32 GB ROM. It also has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for its advantage compared to Redmi A2+’s rear-mounted one.

But even if we don’t compare with other phones, we still think Xiaomi should not release phones with a chipset such as the Helio G36. We saw hands-on video reviews where games like Asphalt 9: Legends couldn’t be installed at all because of its low performance specs. Asphalt 8 was playable in low graphics, but the lag was very visible. We think this has a negative effect on the Xiaomi branding, at least from our point of view.

Redmi A2+ comes in a few different pleasant colors and with a simplistic design. It has decent cameras but not for low-light conditions and zooming will also show a lack of details. There is a dedicated MicroSD slot which is a good thing.
