On 5th December 2023, the popular brand OnePlus unveiled its new OnePlus 12 smartphone to which many consumers were looking forward to. OnePlus was initially founded with a flagship-killer label. Slowly they moved to the flagship price category, but users were having complaints about some of its weak sides. The previous OnePlus 11 and 10 series were fairly successful, but they couldn’t do any justice to the popularity in its earlier days. Having said that, they still have the lower-priced Nord series that are more competitive and well-received as far as the budget is concerned.
But let’s stick to the new OnePlus 12 here and let us give you a quick look at its pricing:
CNY4299 ($603 / BDT 66,400) 12/256 GB
CNY4799 ($673 / BDT 74,100) 16/512 GB
CNY5299 ($743 / BDT 81,800) 16GB/1TB
CNY5799 ($813 / BDT 89,600) 24GB/1TB
As you can see, the price starts from CNY4299 / $603 in China, which means it’s pricey. The global launch date is expected to be 23rd January 2024, with a higher price tag. You can compare its price with the recent Xiaomi 14 and the Xiaomi 14 Pro costs higher. So, you can still say the pricing for OnePlus 12 is sort of fair and attractive as well.
Now, let’s get to its design and build material. Yes, the design has given a favorable impression to us this time. We can see a more bold approach. According to OnePlus, the design is inspired by nature. It has a nice green color with a marble kind of texture. The black and the silver/white color look professional. We don’t see any visible flaws on the outside. The bezels are pretty narrow. There are Gorilla glasses on both sides with an aluminum frame and IP65 water resistance. So, it’s solid on the outside with an upgraded look that matches a premium contemporary style, all good. But it’s a bit thicker and heavier and some of you could be into lighter and thinner phones. So, keep a note of that.
The screen is huge, 6.82 inches. That’s one of those gigantic displays which can’t get any bigger. So, content watching would be pleasing. But what about the quality? We don’t have 68 billion color support, but there is 1 billion color support which is sufficient. The resolution is Quad HD+ 1440 x 3168 pixels, 510 ppi and LTPO AMOLED technology. We do like the sound of it. 4500 nits max. brightness, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, 120Hz refresh rate, blue light filter completes the screen specs.
Camera is one of the major focuses here, especially since some of the OnePlus flagships from the past lacked quality in the camera section. This time we got a 50+64+48 Megapixels setup on the back that consists of a main, a periscope telephoto and an ultrawide lens. These are equally useful. You’ll get a powerful Sony’s Lytia 808 sensor for the main camera, 3x optical zoom for the telephoto lens and a sharp 48 MP ultrawide camera. On top there is Hasselblad branding with finer color accuracy and up to 8K video recording. The 32 MP front facing punch-hole shooter has up to 4K recording support. We have seen samples and they shouldn’t dishearten you.
The performance area is all up to date with the latest 4 nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset by Qualcomm, up to 24 GB massive RAM and an additional 12 GB virtual RAM extension option. We got Android 14 as well. It has an AnTuTu score close to 2 million. To any basic geek, this gives a bit of an idea about the capability of this gadget. One very important thing to mention here is that the phone is not supposed to heat up. We have been seeing this heating issue with many of the latest flagship devices. This can be pretty annoying, especially if you are a gamer. So, OnePlus has done a good job here. The battery is great with its 5400 mAh capacity 100W regular and 50W wireless charging.
Should you go for it? Well, if you want a long-term flagship at this point and you are a fan of the brand, go for it. There are a few other options out there, especially from Xiaomi and Vivo around this budget. You may check them out as well before making a final decision.
